Your Words Matter

Have you played Scrabble lately? Are you looking for some sure-fire words to stir up the conversation? You have come to the right blog. Here are some authentic and awesome words that will make you Royalty in Scrabble-ville.

1. Kiddleywinkempoops – That was the name of the cat owned by English Novelist and Poet Thomas Hardy.

Ok, you may feel that Kiddleywinkempoops is too long, especially if you only have 7 game tiles, so how about this?

2. Ulu – This is a knife used by Eskimo women to clean and skin fish

Still too long? What about these next two words that only have two letters?

3. Aa – It is basaltic lava that has a rough surface

4. K2 – The second highest mountain on earth. It is located in the Karakoram mountain range of Pakistan and China

But, there are other words that can get more points like:

5. Caziques – The title of nobility in early Mexico and the Bahamas

6. Sesquioxidizing – An oxide; a chemical compound (but you already knew that, right?)

And what about words that are found only once in the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible? Consider these jewels:

7. Gnat – Tiny two-winged flies, especially those that sometimes form swarms

8. Greyhound – Tall, slender, and graceful dogs that are smooth-coated

9. Grandmother – Your mother’s mother

The point? Words matter. Not only in the game of Scrabble, but in life. With words, you can make someone laugh or cry. As you speak, you can create a gracious memory, or you can cause someone a lifetime of sorrow. The power of words cannot be underestimated. Mother Teresa said, “Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless."

Edgar Allan Poe was an author of horror stories. He understood the power of words, and used them to bring fear to the strongest man. Poe once said, “Words have no power to impress the mind without the exquisite horror of their reality."

Jesus knew the power of words, too. He could speak of the joys of Heaven or the reality of Hell. As He spoke, thousands responded with either complete respect or deep anger. But Jesus also gave us a clear warning in Matthew 12:36-37 ESV – “I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

We have had some fun with words today. But I will end with this strong admonition from the Old Testament in Proverbs 13:3 ESV – “Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.” Guard your words!
