The Secret to Staying Young!

Are you curious about things? The other day, a friend and I had a deep conversation about grandkids, politics, knee-pain, and getting old. Then he said, “Dave, do you know how to stay young?” I immediately thought of Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León, who sought for the Fountain of Youth in what is now St. Augustine, Florida. Ponce must not have found it because he died in 1521 at age 47.

My friend said that the secret to remaining young was to “stay curious!” And he has a point. People who are curious, seem to have more fun, and to have more reasons to get up in the morning. To be curious, means to be eager to know or learn something. Some of the world’s greatest inventors and explorers were basically curious.

Entrepreneur and film producer Walt Disney said, “We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.”

Acclaimed physicists and inventor Albert Einstein said, “I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.”

Under sea explorer Jacques Yves Cousteau said, “What is a scientist, after all? It is a curious man looking through a keyhole, the keyhole of nature, trying to know what’s going on.”

Thinking back about some of my “curious” friends, I noted some of their common traits. Curious people:

  1. Ask a lot of “What if….” Questions

  2. Like to stir their mind with complex opinions and ideas

  3. Are always on the alert for things that were unusual, deficient, or impossible

  4. Are excited to wake up in the morning to explore, invent, fail and try again

Do you think that God can be curious? That is an interesting question. But since God is omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent, there is little left for God to be curious about.

Is being curious a sin? I think the answer is yes and no. Curiosity can become a sin if it leads you outside of the teachings of Christ and the Scripture. Jesus exposed the corrupt teachings of the Pharisees, because they had long left the Word of God to follow vain traditions, rites, and rituals that were not approved by God. Their perverted curiosity led them into heresy.

In Luke 15, curiosity led the Prodigal son into a heartbreaking search for a more exciting life. He brought sorrow to his father, and found only anguish and loss. Yes, misguided curiosity can lead you into sin.

But there is a positive side to curiosity. Proverbs 25:2 NLT, “It is God's privilege to conceal things and the king's privilege to discover them.” God has hidden some powerful secrets that only the spiritually curious will discover. Can you explain the mystery of the Trinity of the Godhead? Or possibly, you can help us to understand the intricacies of the Incarnation of Christ? Many people want to know why good people have to suffer, and why do children die. Curious students will dig in the Word for answers. That is healthy curiosity.

Perhaps we should all be more like Moses when he saw the burning bush in Exodus 3:3 NLT – “'This is amazing,' Moses said to himself. 'Why isn't that bush burning up? I must go see it.' Let’s be more curious about the amazing things of God. It could keep you young?!?
